Securing Sustainability with Bioheat® Fuel

Kris DeLair, Empire State Energy Association

Living in New York State, we all know how important it is to have a dependable fuel source that helps keep our homes comfortable. Many of us are also looking for ways to shrink our carbon footprint that are attainable and won’t break the bank. Thankfully, there are a wide variety of options on the market today that we as consumers can feel good about using—and one of them is called Bioheat® fuel.

Most homeowners in NY might be surprised to learn that all heating oil sold statewide is B5 Bioheat® fuel, which is a blend of 5% biodiesel and 95% ultra-low sulfur heating fuel. Biodiesel is a renewable energy source made with agricultural by-products and recycled waste oils. A minimum of 5% biodiesel is required in New York’s Bioheat® fuel, but many providers offer Bioheat® fuel blends up to 20% or even higher.

It is encouraging that the outlook for carbon reduction with Bioheat® fuel is a bright one, with the industry working toward carbon neutrality. As it stands right now, Bioheat® fuel with 5% biodiesel saves 3.65% in greenhouse gas emissions1, while Bioheat® fuel with 20% biodiesel fuel blend reaches a whopping 14.6% savings in emissions2. This trustworthy fuel was developed with the planet in mind, and clearly it is doing its part to help the environment.

In addition to the positive impacts Bioheat® fuel has on the planet, there are many other benefits that come with trusting this low-carbon energy source to keep our homes warm. These include affordable fuel prices paired with no equipment modifications, plus the knowledge that using Bioheat® fuel is a positive contribution to the local economy. Many fuel providers delivering Bioheat® fuel are family-owned and operated, which means your hard-earned dollars are staying in your neighborhood with every purchase.

I believe it’s crucial that all homeowners in New York are aware of the benefits of Bioheat® fuel because it’s a sustainable, cost-effective way to shrink our collective carbon footprint. To learn more about Bioheat® fuel, visit BetterwithBioheat.com.
