The Role of Bioheat® Fuel in Energy Diversity

Kris DeLair, Empire State Energy Association
The movement toward lower emissions and a diverse energy future here in New York State means that we must explore and take advantage of all technologies available to help us shrink our collective carbon footprint. Today, I’m pleased to report that renewable Bioheat® fuel is widely available for New York homeowners to use right now and will continue to lower its carbon content over time.

Bioheat® fuel is a blend of traditional heating fuel and renewable biodiesel, which is made from a variety of natural materials including agricultural by-products, like soybean oil, animal fats, and used cooking oil. By using Bioheat® fuel in heating systems in our homes, we can reduce our dependence on finite fuel resources and further promote the utilization of renewable energy sources. Bioheat® fuel can also help us lower carbon dioxide (CO2) and other harmful emissions associated with heating, contributing to climate change mitigation and improved air quality.

While Bioheat® fuel and its impact on the environment are certainly important, it is not the sole factor that makes Bioheat® fuel an essential part of energy diversity. The Bioheat® fuel industry in New York supports over 8,600 jobs and includes over 750 family-owned businesses in the state. Nationwide, the biodiesel industry employs more than 75,000 people and counting, with production continuing to grow. Additionally, using Bioheat® fuel is a cost-effective and economical solution for everyone since it can be used in existing heating fuel systems with no equipment modifications. This compatibility allows for an easier transition to a more sustainable energy source.

The Bioheat® fuel industry is uniquely positioned to continue reducing its carbon emissions, and there is an actionable plan in place to help fast-track Bioheat® fuel to become even better than it already is for our environment. When New York embraces Bioheat® fuel, we’re not just helping the environment—we’re diversifying our energy mix and creating a pathway to a more sustainable tomorrow.
