The transition to Bioheat® fuel, a blend of at least 5% biodiesel with traditional heating fuel, in New York is more than just a win for the environment and consumer energy costs – it’s a win for New York fuel marketers! Many local fuel companies paved the way to make this transition a reality. With Bioheat® fuel as the new standard for heating oil in the state, heating companies can continue to serve their customers with quality fuel product that is efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly.
Over the years, New York’s fuel companies have grown and adapted to the evolving energy industry. Making the choice to advocate for Bioheat® fuel was no different. Many energy marketers across the state actively participated in passing the state-wide blending law for Bioheat® fuel.
In December of 2021, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that requires all heating oil sold for use in any building in the state of New York to contain at least 5% biodiesel by July 2022. A 5% biodiesel blending standard has been in place for New York City and Long Island since 2017.
The blending law has a proactive plan to continue to increase biodiesel blend percentages to continue to lower the fuel’s carbon content and reduce emissions, requiring blends with 10% biodiesel by 2025 and 20% biodiesel by 2030. When this legislation passed, NY fuel marketers were there to show their support.
“Bioheat® fuel helps to eliminate fossil fuels and can be used without replacing existing heating systems, making it a low-cost, low-carbon solution that is available right here, right now,” said New York State Energy Coalition CEO Rocco J. Lacertosa and Empire State Energy Association Executive Director Kris DeLair in a joint statement. “We applaud Governor Hochul for signing this legislation, which makes New York the largest state to enact a biodiesel blending requirement for home heating fuel. We’d also like to thank State Assemblyman Steve Englebright, State Senator Todd Kaminsky, and the National Biodiesel Board for their leadership on this issue.”
Heating fuel marketers will continue to provide prompt, reliable delivery to customers across the state with an environmentally friendly product that can help customers save money and reduce carbon emissions. Oil heat customers will enjoy the same convenience and safety of staying warm with traditional oil, along with the many added benefits that Bioheat® fuel has to offer.
