The state of New York has one of the most assertive decarbonization plans in the United States driven by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act which includes big goals like reducing greenhouse gases by 85% by 2050. There are a lot of factors that will contribute to achieving this goal, and one huge solution that must not be overlooked: Bioheat® fuel.
Bioheat® fuel is a renewable liquid heating fuel that is made by blending ultra-low sulfur heating oil with renewable biodiesel made from recycled and sustainable resources like agricultural by-products and used cooking oils. Bioheat® fuel and biodiesel produce significantly fewer emissions than other traditional fuels and will continue to do so to reach the same goals set by the CLCPA in New York. In fact, the Bioheat® fuel industry has already made a pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Here’s the plan:
In 2021 Bioheat® fuel is readily available in New York. It is already being used in many homes and businesses and can easily be adopted by anyone with an oil heating system. Bioheat® fuel is available in blends ranging from 2% biodiesel up to 20% biodiesel, and all blends can be used in existing oil heat systems with no conversions or extra costs.
By 2023 the goal is for all Bioheat® fuel used in New York to be Bioheat® Plus fuel, which contains 20% biodiesel. Many fuel providers in New York are already working toward increasing to B20 Bioheat® Plus fuel in 2021.
The next milestone is 2030, when the industry aims to have all Bioheat® fuel at 50% biodiesel, or a B50 blend. As the percentage of biodiesel in Bioheat® fuel increases, the greenhouse gas and carbon emissions produced by the fuel decrease. So by 2030, Bioheat® fuel will be even better for the environment and on track to meet New York’s climate goals.
In 2050, Bioheat® fuel will be B100 Bioheat® fuel, which will be 100% renewable and carbon neutral.
There are a lot of clean energy options out there that can contribute to decarbonization efforts, but Bioheat® fuel stands out for several major reasons:
Bioheat® fuel is compatible with existing oil heating systems, which means consumers do not have to pay to convert their homes or deal with the tedious process of converting.
Bioheat® fuel is in action in New York right now. Homes and businesses across the state are already using it and the supply and infrastructure is ready to support increased demand.
Last but certainly not least, Bioheat® fuel is delivered by local, multi-generational family businesses that have been serving their communities for decades. Consumers who use Bioheat® fuel will be able to receive personal, high-quality service from familiar and friendly faces. These businesses employ so many people in our neighborhoods.
