Fuel Payment Plans: What to Know Before You Enroll

Spring and early summer are good times to think about fuel payment plans. Enrollment periods often open around this time, but the exact timing, plan names, and details can vary from provider to provider. If you’re considering a payment plan for your Bioheat® fuel deliveries, it helps to understand the basic options before you choose one.

Common Payment Plan Types

Budget Plans

Budget plans spread your heating fuel costs over a set period of time, making your payments more predictable from month to month. Instead of paying larger bills when fuel usage is highest, you pay a more manageable amount throughout the plan term.

Most often, your fuel provider will take your fuel usage history to predict the amount of fuel you may use in the upcoming season as well as estimated fuel prices, and will divide that total into equal monthly payments. These plans typically run between 10 and 12 months.

The exact setup can vary by provider, so it’s important to ask how payments are calculated and whether there are any adjustments later in the season.

Pre-Buy Plans

Pre-buy plans let you purchase fuel in advance, often before peak-season demand kicks in. This may help you lock in a rate ahead of winter and give you more certainty about your fuel costs. Pre-buy plans are often calculated in the same way that budget plans are.

As with other plans, the details can vary, including how much fuel you can pre-buy, what happens if you use more or less than your estimated fuel usage for the season, and when delivery is scheduled.

Price Cap Plans

Price cap plans are designed to help protect you from rising fuel costs by setting a maximum price you’ll pay for fuel during the plan period, typically 10 to 12 months. It is common with price cap plans to also have downside protection, which means that, in the event that daily market prices are lower than your cap price, you will always pay the lower amount.

In many cases, this option is paired with a budget or pre-buy plan, but it can also be offered separately. Some local providers may charge an additional fee to add a price cap, so be sure to ask how the plan is structured and what it includes.

Other Payment Plans May Be Available

While budget plans, price cap plans, and pre-buy plans are some of the most common, they are not the only fuel payment plans available. Your preferred provider may offer additional options or variations, so it’s always worth asking what’s available before you enroll.
