The Fuel That’s Friendlier to Our Planet

Kris DeLair, Empire State Energy Association

The US Energy Information Administration reports that 52% of the energy we use in our homes is for heating and air conditioning—all in all, it takes a lot of power to keep our homes at a comfortable temperature. In New York specifically, it sure can feel like we’re fighting against Mother Nature for a lot of the year.

Fortunately, we have a plethora of options when it comes to heating our homes with a fuel we feel good about. For example, maybe you want fuel that can power all your appliances. Maybe you like an option that is stored at your home. Or, if environmental friendliness is high on your list, you may choose a fuel that lowers carbon emissions.

New York oil customers may not be aware that their fuel has been evolving over recent decades to pursue an active role in carbon reduction. All heating oil delivered in the state of New York is actually Bioheat® fuel, a sustainable blend of ultra-low sulfur heating oil blended with a percentage of biodiesel. Biodiesel is a renewable energy source created out of agricultural by-products and recycled waste oils.

The industry’s commitment to providing cleaner fuels motivated engineers to search for ways to reduce oil consumption without inhibiting access to the trustworthy fuel. The solution was found in biodiesel: by blending biodiesel into every gallon of traditional oil, consumption of the latter is reduced by as much as 20%. This results in fewer emissions and reduced carbon output.

Biodiesel and Bioheat® fuel are enthusiastically employed by fuel delivery providers to foster a more sustainable future. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Gregory Childs at Main-Care Energy, who shared, “We’ve been delivering Bioheat® fuel for years, and our customers love both the eco-friendliness and state tax credits that it offers. I truly believe Bioheat® fuel is the path to a greener future and the most sustainable option for our customers. We hope that more New York residents can learn about Bioheat® fuel and what makes it an affordable and actionable renewable energy option.”
