This year on Earth Day, let’s give it up for Bioheat® fuel! This eco-friendly fuel is making waves and is doing good for the environment. If you didn’t already know, Bioheat® fuel is a blend of ultra-low sulfur heating fuel and renewable biodiesel. Blends range from 5% biodiesel to 20% biodiesel.
Biodiesel is a liquid fuel derived entirely from renewable and recycled sources, like soybean oil. Other resources used to create biodiesel include cooking oil, inedible corn oil, fats, tallows, and various recycled oils.
Biodiesel is great for the environment and has achieved a remarkable reduction in greenhouse gases, reducing emissions by an impressive 86%, compared to conventional petroleum diesel[1]. It is safer for the environment, cleaner for our heating systems, better for our communities, and the only actionable solution to reach a carbon-free future.
Bioheat® fuel is better for the environment. It reduces emissions up to 14.6% and the industry is committed to helping New York achieve carbon neutrality[2]. Having already started the work, all heating oil sold by providers in New York State is at least 5% biodiesel blend, or B5, Bioheat® fuel as of 2022, and fuel providers are already starting to increase to 20% biodiesel, or B20[3].
Bioheat® fuel reduces SOx, CO2, particulate matter, and mercury emissions[4]. By 2030, The Bioheat® fuel industry anticipates B50 or 50% biodiesel which eliminates 500 million gallons of heating fuels and 4.29 million metric tons of carbon[5]. And by 2050, at 100% carbon neutral Bioheat® fuel, which eliminates 1 billion gallons of heating fuels and 8.59 metric tons of carbon[6].
It costs $0 to start using Bioheat® fuel today. All heating oil sold by providers in New York State is at least 5% biodiesel blend, or B5, Bioheat® fuel, with many providers offering even higher blends. All you need is your heating system & fuel tank to use Bioheat® fuel. Plus, don’t forget to take advantage of the added benefit of the tax credit for using Bioheat® fuel. NY rewards your great choice! Get up to 20¢ off per gallon via tax credits when Bioheat® fuel with 6% biodiesel or more is used for heat and hot water in New York State.
